Watch files on TV

If you like downloading shows but hate watching them on the computer then there are a couple of easy solutions.

1. Buy a DivX DVD player. The ‘DivX’ part means you can watch ANY file format so long as it has been coded by DivX or XviD. (Files will have either of these names in the title, and pretty much all files use one or the other). Either burn the files to a CD or DVD if you have lots, or buy a player that accepts USB pen drives and SD memory cards if you just want to watch one or two files at a time.

2. Buy a portable media player. These are simply external disk drives that plug into your TV in the same way as a DVD player or games console, so you can browse and choose files to watch. They instantly convert the file into a TV signal. The main advantage is that you can keep all your video files on this device, so that you don’t clog up your computer hard drive plus you can take it to a friend’s house and use it with their TV. More pricey but also more convenient.

Where to buy

DivX players start from just £20 if you search here (portable players with screens from £50)

Media players start from around £90, and have the advantage of being able to add more memory later on.
